5 New Condiments with No High-Fructose Corn Syrup

Today's update contains condiments with no high-fructose corn syrup! Condiments seem to be one of the hardest product areas to find hfcs-free versions.  Some of these were suggestions by visitors and some were items I came across while doing my own surfing. I did do my own research though, and have included the links so you can check out the ingredients for yourself. Here are today's additions: Duke's Mayonnaise Garland Jack's Barbecue Sauces Weber Barbecue Sauces Woeber Mustards Doux South Pickles Some of these are harder to find than others, but I think they are all worth seeking out. Also, if you look at the simplicity of most of the ingredients, it seems like most of these would be easy to make at home.  I've tried … [Read more...]

3 New Items Added to the No High-Fructose Corn Syrup List

Here are a few additions to the No High-Fructose Corn Syrup List.   My favorite addition is Simply Heinz ketchup. I like to make my own ketchup sometimes, but it's nice to know I can just pick up a bottle in a pinch. It seems really natural and my family loves it.  It also says on the bottle it is Gluten-Free, Kosher, and  Pareve. The other two additions are beverages: Jarritos soda pop and Powerade (contains artificial sweeteners). One of my biggest irritations with HFCS being in almost everything, is how bad it is when it comes to barbecue sauce.  There really are very few choices when it comes to finding barbecue sauce with no high-fructose corn syrup in it. That's why I especially like the Simply Heinz ketchup. You can use it … [Read more...]

Root Beer With No High-Fructose Corn Syrup – Updated

UPDATE! A reader has brought to my attention (and I confirmed this on their web site) that Dad's Root Beer has reverted to using high-fructose corn syrup, unfortunately. So I will be crossing them off the list right now. Dad's Root Beer With No High-Fructose Corn Syrup I know I just made a post about root beer with no high-fructose corn syrup, but I just tried this and it is the BEST root beer I've tasted in a long time! I'm not sure if it's widely available. My local grocery store was selling them individually for a dollar each, with no multi-pack option available. $1 each sounds like a lot and it kind of is. But it's made with real cane sugar, which is so much better tasting than HFCS. And as an occasional treat, why not? I drink … [Read more...]

Why Does Soup Have High-Fructose Corn Syrup In It?

Many soup recipes call for just a touch of sugar, especially if they contain tomatoes, so it's not wholly untoward to add some. But to add high-fructose corn syrup? Sugar crystals help neutralize the acidity of tomatoes, so it is helpful to add some to tomato soups and soups which contain tomatoes. But high-fructose corn syrup is simply sweet - thus causing some soups to contain both HFCS *and* sugar. So if sugar is the optimal ingredient, why does soup have high-fructose corn syrup in it? My guess as to why they also add HFCS is because, in addition to being a sweetener, it has a thickening effect. So a soup can be "thick and creamy" - which is usually an effect of slow-cooking for many hours - without actually having been cooked … [Read more...]

I always check before submitting something to the list, but sometimes companies change things, so be sure to always verify on the label itself. This list is meant to be a guide and not a bible. This is a list I have compiled (and am actively adding to) of products which do not contain HFCS. These are all products that now seems to contain HFCS more … [Read more...]
