Is Your School Cafeteria Serving Up High-Fructose Corn Syrup?

Considering how many products have HFCS these days, it’s not surprising to find out that there could be a whole load of it in your kids’ school lunch! From the bread to salad dressing – desserts and even flavored/chocolate milk!

The Anderson School District in Anderson, SC has been working on making lunches healthier for years. This year, that includes eliminating the HFCS in flavored milks.

After reading this, it occurred to me that I have no idea whether or not the cafeteria at my son’s school is HFCS free, but now I plan to ask! (And act.)

I know for sure…ours is not. I find it amusing, to a certain extent, that my kids come home to tell me that they read the label of something that was served at school and HFCS is the 2nd or 3rd ingredient. Their breakfast offerings (which I found out was being “pushed” on the kids) are horrendous. We try to pack a lunch and for my middle child, even his snack. But…kids will be kids and when they don’t get that junk at home often…they don’t try very hard to not choose something being offered that most likely is very unhealthy. The basic snack that was provided by most of my K’s son’s class throughout the year was cupcakes (purchased) and Hawiian Punch. Wow. Healthy! LOL
