I visited a favorite yogurt shop recently, and I asked the merchant for a nutritional info list, and the she showed me a bulletin board with 20 + ingredients, including HFCS. She blew off my concernsaying that “everything in America is corn syrup.” Guess I won’t be going there anymore. How can yogurt shops, proporting to be healthy. get away with this deception?
Hi,
I was wondering if you had noticed that the corn industry is now referring to HFCS as “corn sugar” and “corn sweetener”, and having other companies do the same, which makes reading labels quite scary. If HFCS can be called “corn sugar”, then some companies might just list it as “sugar.” It seems now that “sugar” can mean anything from cane sugar to beet sugar to this “corn sugar” nonsense. I am especially concerned because I know that some companies (see articles on the “sugar” in Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback) list sugar as an ingredient but they are not using cane sugar. If beet sugar can be shortened to “sugar,” what’s to stop companies from listing HFCS as “sugar” since it is now being called corn sugar? I am starting to think I will have to cook everything (bread, pasta, condimants) for myself pretty soon just to avoid HFCS.
I have checked several different grocery stores in several states and still haven’t found Vlasic sweet gherkins without high fructose corn syrup. Can anyone tell me where I can find these? I’m looking for ones made with regular sugar and not sugar free (or HFCS of course). Thanks.
